What are the Reasons a Key Won’t Turn in a Lock?

Having a key that won’t turn in a lock is a problem, especially if you are trying to lock your home before heading to work. It can really slow down your day. Knowing the reasons behind a key refusing to turn can help you fix the problem quickly or, more importantly, prevent the issue from arising in the first place.

Dirt and Dust

One of the most common reasons your key will not turn in your lock is a build-up of dirt and dust within the lock itself. This can be an easy fix with a little bit of lubricant. Use a silicone-based lubricant instead of an oil one (like WD 40) as this can cause other problems further down the line.

Misaligned Lock

Having a misaligned lock is a common problem with UPVC doors. These doors are designed to be adjustable, which can cause a problem if it slips out of place. You will need to realign the door once more.

While this can be tricky if you have never done it before, it is an easy fix. Any trained locksmith can have your door fully functional again within minutes, so, if you are unsure, call your locksmith.

Broken Lock Cylinder

Unfortunately, a broken cylinder is not a quick fix that you can accomplish. You need the help of a trained locksmith, or you will need to replace it. Calling out a reliable locksmith is often the quickest way to get your door back in working order once more. Be careful of attempting to fix it yourself as you can cause more damage to your door’s locking mechanism.
