How to Gain Access to a Locked Trunk

We’ve all done it at some point. We opened the trunk of our car and placed our keys inside while we took our groceries out. The problem arises when you shut the trunk of your car with the keys still inside and the trunk locks. Now you have a locked trunk and no keys.

Thankfully, there are many ways to gain access to the trunk of your car without your keys. We’ll start with the most obvious one in this guide on how to regain access to a locked trunk.

Try Opening the Boot

Although it sounds obvious, it is a step often missed. If you know your boot locks when you close it, why would you try opening it again?

As technology has moved on, so has the genius around key fobs. Some cars can detect if you have locked your keys in the trunk. The car trunk will then refuse to lock. This is because of the programming in the fob on your car keys. So, before you panic, just try your boot or doors one more time, as one of them may have been deliberately unlocked by your car so you can retrieve your keys.

Use the Spare Keys to Open the Locked Trunk

With most vehicles, the trunk of the car uses the same keys as the doors, therefore your spare keys will work on the trunk. If you do not have access to any spare keys, you need not despair. There are other ways of retrieving your keys.

Note: It is advisable to prepare for these issues by using your locksmith to create a spare set of keys. The extra keys can then be left somewhere safe, like in your home or with a reliable friend. Do not leave the spare keys in the car.

The Trunk Release Button

This is a quick and easy solution for modern cars. If you still have access to your car, search for your trunk release button. This could be on your steering wheel, dashboard, or middle console. If you still haven’t found it, look in these other less common places: the driver’s side floor, the driver’s side door, or the Glove Box.

This will pop the lock on your trunk and allow you to gain access once more.

Fold or Climb over the Car Seats

If you do have access to your car, then you may be able to reach your trunk by moving backward through your vehicle. There are many cars that have large boot space that goes right up to the back of the chairs, so by folding the seats down or maneuvering around them, you will be able to gain access to your boot from the inside.

From here, you should also be able to access the trunk release hatch if your car has one. This will open your trunk from the inside. (All cars made after 2001 have a trunk release hatch).

Release the Latch of your Locked Trunk with a Wire Hanger

A wire hanger can be used to reach inside a vehicle and manipulate the locks. You may need a shoelace or some other string to assist you, depending on where your latch is.

If done correctly, you can use a wire hanger to release the boot latch opening your boot from the inside. This method can take some time if you are not experienced. However, a locksmith will have the right tools and can do this quickly.

Lock Picking or Bumping your Locked Trunk

There is no crime in lock picking your own car. Jiggle Keys and Tryout keys are specialized tools designed to gain access to a car through lockpicks. If your car has a deadbolt, this method may require a drill to access the lock actuator.

You should not attempt this if you do not know what you are doing, as you can damage the lock. It’s recommended that you call the experts in this field to help you out. Try your local locksmiths.
