Unfortunately, gun sakes are easy to break into, but there are a few factors that make some safes easier targets than others.
Over the years, many safe manufacturers have made bold claims and used marketing to convince gun owners that their safes are a sure thing. However, this is mostly only true if you avoid a few common mistakes.
To make sure your gun safe is safe, stick to these tips:
- Bolt it down. If you think that burglars can’t or won’t be able to move your safe, think again. Today’s criminals come prepared so make sure that no matter how good your safe is that you bolt it down. If your safe doesn’t come with anchor bolts that you can use during installation, it’s not as safe as you think it is.
- Consider the materials. If there is any indication that your safe is made with metal and drywall, it’s not safe. Cheaper safes tend to be made with metal, but that metal is glued to drywall or plastic. If there are any gaps between the metal that surrounds your safe and your safe, rather shop around for a new one. Even if your safe has a thick wall, this doesn’t indicate it’s superior. Secure safes are made with thick metal and have a heavy door.
- Save up. It can be tempting to purchase a gun safe at a good price but at what cost. Cheaper safes generally aren’t as secure, so if your budget is tight, rather save up so that you can purchase a more secure gun safe.
