Rim locks are common locks found on many homes, especially older homes. They date as far back as Ancient Egypt and became very popular as the preferred locking mechanism for most homes in the colonial era.
But as times have changed and technology has improved, are they still necessary for your home?
Rim Locks as Extra Security on Exterior Doors
A rim lock or rim latch is essentially the same device with one difference. A rim lock has a key while a rim latch doesn’t. Both are found in the modern home.
These types of locks are often used in addition to other door locks if used on the main entrance. Usually set higher on the doorframe then the main lock. This lock provides an unsecure closure on an exterior door that will allow for quick entry should you simply want to keep the door closed while working in the garden or talking to your neighbor.
If using a rim latch you may not have a key to lock this from the outside. However, once locked in place from the inside it adds an extra layer of security should an intruder manage to pick or bump your main lock.
Rim Latches Interior Doors
A rim latch is most often found on bathroom doors inside the home. They are also found on doors to offices, studies, sometimes even bedrooms. These locks are controlled by a little mechanism (a thumb press or a turn handle) allowing the lock to be controlled only from one side of the door.
Occasionally you will find rim locks on the interior, especially if it is an older house. These locks will have a key and open from both sides.
Are Rim Locks Needed?
While Rim locks are a great option for in-house rooms, they are not necessary for your home.
As times and technology have moved on, alternatives to the rim lock have appeared. A mortice lock will offer more protection as will smart locks and other deadbolts.
However, rim locks can be used in addition to other locks creating an extra layer of security should you need it.
It is not advised to have a rim lock as your main lock on an exterior door.
