Can Deadbolts Be Rekeyed?

Just like your door lock, it is also possible to rekey a deadbolt and there are two ways to do this.

The first option is to purchase a rekey kit for your specific deadbolt brand and take care of the rekeying yourself. However, this option is not recommended if you don’t have time, patience, and some general know-how. The reason for this is because it is possible to damage the deadbolt, which will require you to purchase and install a new one.

The ideal and second option is to contact a locksmith to assist you. This is by far the quickest and most convenient option too.

To rekey a deadbolt, the unit needs to be removed from the door so that the cylinder inside the deadbolt can be removed more easily. It should be noted that rekeying a deadbolt will not affect the integrity of the lock, nor will it make it more secure.

The good news is that it is still possible to rekey a deadbolt if you no longer have the original key.

Is it better to rekey a deadbolt or replace it entirely though?

Rekeying is always a quicker and more affordable option. However, if the deadbolt is old or damaged to the point that it’s putting your safety at risk, it is far better to replace the deadbolt entirely.
