It is said that there is no key in the world that is impossible to copy. However, some keys have legal surroundings and patents that make it a more complicated process. Some safe keys are among this type of key. 

Safe Key Copying

When it comes to the security of a lock, the more expensive it is, the more secure it is. This goes for safe locks and keys as well. If a safe lock and key is more expensive it may have extra features that complicate the key copying process, like a patent. 

Despite this, it is still possible for most safe keys to be copied by locksmiths. It’s just going to take longer. 

For a standard safe key, the process can be completed in less than an hour. The time it takes depends on the complexity of the key. Double bitted keys will take longer than regular ones and may need finishing by hand. 

If your safe key is more complex it may take longer, it also may require the locksmith to have access to extra tools and skills. 

If They Are DND Safe Keys

DND stands for Do Not Duplicate. If your safe key has a DND order on it, then you will find it a lot harder to get a copy of the key. 

If a safe key is four sided, it may be a DND key. This doesn’t mean that the Locksmith will find it impossible to duplicate the key. If they have the tools needed, they will contact the manufacturer of the key to first check that it is okay to duplicate the key. They will also need to check with the client that they have the right to get the safe key copied. For this, they would need to provide proof of ownership of the safe. 

There is currently no law regulating the DND keys, so it may simply be down to whether the locksmith has the skills and equipment needed to copy the key. 

A reputable locksmith will always check first for the security of the safe’s owner.
