Can You Copy a Do Not Duplicate Key?

At one point or another, you’re going to need to duplicate a key, but what if it says Do Not Duplicate? Can you still copy it?

There is no law that prevents the duplication of a Do Not Duplicate key, it’s merely a recommendation. This means your home or business premises might not be as secure as you think. Just because a key says Do Not Duplicate doesn’t mean someone hasn’t done it in the past.

If you have recently moved into a new home or moved the location of your business, it’s still best to either change the locks or rekey the existing locks. This way, any duplicates will no longer work.

While Do Not Duplicate keys can be copied, restricted keys cannot, not unless it’s done by the original manufacturer.

Restricted keys are much harder to copy and require special equipment, so you will need the help of a professional. Restricted keys are also protected by US patent laws, which means unauthorized copies can result in a sizeable fine. Even if a locksmith copies the key instead of a manufacturer, they need to be an approved locksmith for that particular key brand.

Before a restricted key can be copied, you will also need to produce identification and documentation that proves there’s permission to duplicate that key.

If it’s additional security you’re after, a restricted key is a better option than a Do Not Duplicate key.
