How to Get a Broken Key Out of a Lock

Keys break off in locks all the time. Unfortunately, this also means you’re left locked out until you can fix the problem. Is it even possible to get a broken key out of a lock?

The good news is that there are several options available to you. The method you decide on depends on what you have available to you and how quickly you need to unlock your door.

Tips for How to Get a Broken Key Out of a Lock

Whatever you do, don’t attempt to use the key again. Attempting to wiggle the piece of the key in the lock using the piece in your hand could push the broken piece in further.

Here are some of the things you can try should you find yourself with half a key in your hand and the other in a lock. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of these methods will depend on how far the broken piece of the key has been pushed into the lock.

It also helps if you can lubricate the lock slightly before you begin.

Grab Some Tweezers

If you have a thin enough pair of tweezers and the key is sticking out far enough, you could pull it out. If your tweezers are too thick, rather don’t use them as they could push the lock in further. They should fit comfortably on either side of the key. Don’t squeeze the tweezers too hard either as a failed grip will also push the key in further.

Use Super Glue

For this to work, the broken key should also be accessible. Apply some glue to the end of a match and apply it to the part of the key that’s protruding. Be careful not to push too hard or you will end up pushing the key into the lock. Wait for the glue to bind to the key before pulling it out gently. Don’t try and use the key again as the glue won’t be strong enough to turn the key.

Contact a Locksmith

If you want a fast and efficient solution, contact a local locksmith to assist with the key extraction. They will have a broken key extractor on hand that’s specifically designed for this issue. This extractor has hooks, which will grab onto the teeth of the key. This can take several attempts, but it is by far the most effective way to get a broken key out of a lock.

Tap the Cylinder

If you are dealing with a padlock, this method might work for you since the keyhole is facing down. Tap the side of the lock with a hammer to try and dislodge the key. You could also try striking it against a solid surface. Just make sure that the keyhole is always pointing downwards and that you don’t accidentally strike the keyhole.

Use Thin Metal

If you have two thin pieces of metal lying around, you could use this too. Line the pieces on either side of the key (not the side with the teeth) and apply pressure so that they slide in far enough for you to pull the broken key towards you. You will probably find that the key only moves out a little bit at a time, so you will need to do this several times. If you don’t have metal, you could also try plastic or firm paper stock.

While these methods are known to work, the best option is to call a local locksmith. This will save you time and frustration. The Security and Lock Corporation Miami is available 24/7. Contact us on (305) 846-9360.
