Is it Possible to Fix a Glove Box Lock

The glove box in a car provides us with the perfect nook for our traveling essentials. We all throw items such as the car manual, spare map, sunglasses, napkins, etc., in the glove box for when we need them. Many car owners use this box frequently, making it frustrating when we can’t lock or unlock it.  So, it helps to know if it is possible to fix a glove box lock.

How to Fix a Glove Box Lock

It is a relatively simple matter to fix a glove box lock. But how you fix it depends on what is wrong in the first place. This quick guide will help you to get it working again.

1.      If the key isn’t turning.

Use some silicone-based lubricant (oil-based lubricant will not do your lock any good). Next, wipe your key with the lubricant and try your lock again. If it still isn’t working, move to step 4.

2.      If you can’t get your key in.

Your locking cylinder may have broke. Don’t force it. It will make things worse. Move to step 4.

3.      The Key is turning, but nothing is happening.

In this case, there is a good chance the locking cylinder has broken. There is no communication between the key and the lock. Move to step 4.

4.      Fix the Lock.

You can do this yourself by replacing the lock. Many automotive companies and locksmiths have replacement locks for sale, or you can hire a locksmith. A locksmith may have to replace the lock, but they may also be able to fix the lock, saving you time and money.

Note: Never force a key into a lock, and never force a key to turn when it is stuck. It could result in the key snapping in the lock, causing more damage to your glove box.

Glove Box Latch, not a Lock?

A latch secures to a catch. The handle moves the latch in and out of a catch. If you have a latch that is not locking or failing to unlock, there’s another way of doing things.

1.      If the handle moves freely, but the latch is not.

This would indicate that the latch and the handle have become disconnected. If you cannot get the glove box to open, it is better to get the help of your local automotive locksmith. They can open the glove box without doing any further damage to it.

If you have access, you may want to replace the lock yourself. You can buy replacement glove box locks and latches from any automotive retailer or locksmith. If you are unsure how to replace the lock, your locksmith will be happy to assist you.

2.      If the handle won’t move.

The mechanism inside may have broken. Forcing it will damage it. In this situation, a good recommendation is to get the help of a locksmith to assist you.
