Should a Locksmith or Dealership Replace a Vehicle Key

When you need a need to replace a vehicle key, you have two options. You can either contact your dealership to assist you or find a local locksmith. In terms of which option is better, it all depends on how quickly you need the key and how much you are willing to spend.

If you require a new vehicle key as soon as possible and would ideally prefer to spend less, contacting a local locksmith is a better option. Should you choose to contact a dealership, know that there’s a chance they might not be able to help you right away and that they could charge you more.

What’s more, choosing a dealership means you will more than likely need to get your car to them, where a locksmith will meet you at your location.

If for any reason you don’t have the original car key, a locksmith can still assist you. They will require some information from you such as the vehicle registration papers before they can create a new key though. A locksmith can also program the key to ensure it works with your vehicle.

If the original key is locked inside your vehicle, it also makes more sense for a locksmith to assist you with a key copy, since they will be helping you get back inside your car.

You can expect to wait 20 – 30 minutes for a new key to be made and programmed. Allow for a few extra minutes if you’ve been locked out of your vehicle.
