As you look at higher-grade locks or locks that are harder to bypass you may come across the Tubular Key. But what is a tubular key? What is it used for? And what makes it special? Here are the answers you seek.
The Tubular Key
Is also known as the radial or barrel key. It is a key that is circular in shape and hollow on the inside, like a tube hence the popular name. The locks that the keys enter have a round entryway and a little notch that helps you to always place the key in the right way.
While it is a key that has been around for decades it is not one that gets much use.
The tubular key is most commonly used for vending machines. However, in recent years, they are also finding common use in motorcycle and bike locks.
The notches on the key can be found on the tip. When compared to the common house key you will find that the notches are not deep. While it works on the same six to ten-pin technique as other locks, the pins are vertical instead of horizontal.
These facts mixed with the cylindrical shape make them hard to duplicate and the locks harder to pick without the right tools. Always call ahead before visiting a locksmith for a tubular key as not every locksmith will keep them in stock.
