Lock Grades
To understand the high-security aspects of a lock, it helps to understand the grading system and what it is that makes a lock a grade.
Grade 1 Lock.
This is the highest security lock available and is normally found in commercial properties. A grade 1 lock must undergo rigorous testing. This testing includes weight testing and strike testing, which are tests designed to see how well a door will cope when someone is attempting to force their way through. Grade 1 locks need to survive at least six strikes and a weight test of 360 lbs.
Grade 2 Lock.
A grade 2 lock is the lock for most residential homes. The testing for a grade 2 lock is not as rigorous as the testing for a grade 1, but they still have to pass at least four strikes and a 250lbs test. Therefore, forcing the door of a grade 2 lock will not be easy.
Grade 3 Lock.
A grade 3 lock is the lowest grade lock available. It provides adequate protection for a home. Grade 3 locks must survive a minimum of 2 strike tests and a 150lbs weight test.
Other High-Security Safety Features
While the strike and weight tests defend your home or property against forceful entry, other features make a high-security lock high security.
Anti-bumping technology prevents your lock from the popular bumping technique, a form of lock picking. Bump keys can open a traditional pin tumbler lock in less than 30 seconds.
Pick proofing designs are within locks to make it difficult for a burglar to pick a lock. Of course, no lock is 100% pickproof, but the more intricate the lock design, the harder it is for traditional lockpicks to work.
Many high-security locks also have drilling protection, another popular lock picking tool.
A high-security lock may come with a DNC note on keys. Locksmiths cannot make copies of these keys without special authorization. You may need to prove you own the property to get a second key made.
