Having your car key break off in the ignition can be one of the most frustrating experiences, but not all hope is lost, there are ways to get it out.
If you are close to a few tools and materials, here are a few methods you can try to get the key out.
- Grab Some Pliers. If a part of the car key is visible, you might be able to use a pair of pliers to pull it out – needle nose pliers are best. You could even go as far as adding a small spot of glue to the tip of the pliers to help it grip onto the key. As an extra step, try adding a small amount of lubricant to the ignition, making it easier for the key to slip out.
- Use a Small Hacksaw Blade. While this method could work, exercise caution, as it could damage the ignition. Insert a small hacksaw blade into the ignition, ensuring it is lying flat against your car key. You can now turn the ignition to unlock it and the end result will hopefully be that the blade grabs onto the key and you can pull it out.
- Try a Wire Hanger. If you have a wire coat hanger handy, you could shape the end to function like a hook. Use the hook to try and swipe the car key out of the ignition.
These are just some of the methods you could use if your key breaks off in the ignition. However, if you want to save yourself time, money, and potential damage, it’s best to contact a professional locksmith such as South Beach Locksmith.
